Gearing up for canning season (Tattler Reusable Canning Lids Giveaway)

Last week we cracked open the last of the canned apricots in honey syrup and spooned them up with whipped cream.

That jar was the end of my fruit preserves from last summer (although there’s still jam to be found) and it got me thinking about the season ahead. I intend to make up for lost time this year, as last summer my pregnancy left me too tired to cook dinner, let alone put up produce. Even though I’m certain this summer is going to be one of the busiest ever, and I’ll have a baby to care for, I’m determined to keep my canning pot occupied.

Local produce hasn’t quite hit the markets yet, but I am getting ready for it. Making sure I have a supply of large and small reusable canning lids from Tattler is an important part of planning for canning.

Tattler Lids provide a cost effective alternative to metal lids, as well as a safe, environmentally friendly product for home food preservation. I’ve been using their lids for over a year now with no complaints and I recommend them to my friends and family. It’s nice to know that the food I am preserving is BPA free.

Hit the jump to read about a few more ways I’m getting ready for the canning season, and a mega giveaway from Tattler Reusable Canning Lids! One winner will take home a giveaway package of 100 regular lids AND 100 wide mouth lids with reusable rubber rings!

Prepping for 2012 Canning Season

Back to Basics. It’s never a bad idea to review canning basics, and with my frazzled postpartum brain, it is essential. If your new to canning or just looking for a refresher, read our Canning 101 primer.

Equipment Check. Don’t be the knumbskull who is all set to jam – only to discover the pectin is past its due date and there’s nary an empty jar in the pantry. Go over everything you will need, toss those old canning lids containing BPA, and order some reusable lids from Tattler. Now you’re set.

Plan to Stay Sane. I mean it. Set realistic goals and check out these 7 Ways to Avoid Burnout During Canning Season. You can thank me come October.

Get a Guidebook. Luckily for us, Marisa of Food in Jars (and Simple Bites contributor) has a cookbook coming out in just a few days and in plenty of time for spring produce. Food in Jars: Preserving in Small Batches Year-Round is available for pre-order on Amazon, so get yours now! Also, be sure to check out Marisa’s book tour page to see if she is coming to a city near you.

  1. This year (sometime within the next few weeks) will start off the year by canning some chicken and some hamburger. When Autumn rolls around we do a lot of jams and jellies (most of it wild harvested food!) from Wild plums and apricots, to strawberries, blueberries and elderberries.

  2. I’m out of my Tomato Basil Jam and Pickled Tomatoes…bring on the fresh, local food! I can’t wait to get my ‘Food In Jars: Preserving in Small Batches Year-Round…waiting!

  3. Glad to discover the site! I’ve got black bean soup in the pressure canner as we speak, so what better opportunity while I’m babysitting the soup to enter to win lids!!!

  4. my to-do list is growing exponentially! but first things first … while technically not canning, i do need jars and lids to make homemade kimchi! that is number one on my to-do list!! after that, it’s canning my surplus CSA veg!

  5. On my canning-related to do list is to start buying a few dozen Tattler lids and slowly building up a collection, but winning 200 of them would be so much better! Something about using the BPA coated lids to put up my nurtured-from-seed organic heirloom tomatoes doesn’t sit well with me.

I choose to live “simply,” so this is my one entry chance!

  6. I already have Tattler on my facebook, because they are awesome! Really want to win these! Looking to purchase 500 lids this year for jars donated to me. Could really use the help getting started on my collection by winning this! 🙂

  7. This year, I am going to can veggies for the 1st time. I’m planning on making sourkraut, as well as spicy beans, carrots & asparagus. Ymmm!

  8. Liked a long time ago – Simple Bites on FB!
This year it’s more about teaching those that want to learn make it happen! My goal is to do recipes this year that inspire those people to want to do more. So many have asked me my opinion about the Tattler Lids. I have not used them yet, but if I win I will check out a box and if I love it will make sure to promote this lid as an alternative. I will give the rest to the people who inspire me to keep working on my site and turning out safe practice for canning!

  9. I like both Simple Bites and Tattler on Facebook. My plan is to can as much as I can from my new garden at my new home. I also plan to make another batch of garlic jelly.

  10. I already have 4 gallons of kraut started and have made apple pear sauce to can this weekend!!~ love it!!!

  11. I want to do more pressure canning. I want to can corn and green beans. I’ve not canned them before, and they are some of my favorite veggies.

  12. This year I am planning on canning a lot. It is a great way to save much money. Those peaches you show look wonderful…I think I will give them a try!

  13. First on my to-do list is the planning you mentioned. My second baby is due in a couple of weeks, and I want to get organized before hand since it seems like things always come up and I missed prime produce for canning. I plan to make a general calendar of when I might pick/procure local produce so I know when I might want to have some canning time set aside. I’ve usually done most in the fall (tomatoes, peaches, etc.) I’d like to add strawberry jam, maybe blueberry syrup, etc. so I’ll need to plan ahead–this will also help me stock up on supplies since my other excuse for not canning is waiting for cans/lids to go on sale!

  14. I liked Simpe bites on facebook!! I would love to win these, I have never heard of them and I have canned for over 30 years…

  15. I have only canned pickles, strawberry jam, pepper jelly and salsa in the past… This year, I have purchased a pressure canner, and plan on trying a lot more, for my families health and benefit. I’d LOVE to win the Tattler lids!

  16. Would love to win these! Canning not only gets our creative juices flowing, it makes good sense healthwise and money-wise.

  17. Green beans are really tops here at out house, so we are on the lookout for a pressure canner. Thanks for the contest.
