Michael Smith’s Family Meals (giveaway)

You know we recently vacationed in P.E.I, a place where beloved Canadian Chef Michael Smith calls home. You can’t go far on the island without seeing his face in a bookstore window or on a poster.

I’m a big fan of Michael’s cookbooks, Fast Flavours is in regular rotation – and his latest, Family Meals, is right up my alley. In fact, it hasn’t left my kitchen since it arrived in the mail; that is entirely the point of the book.

With sections such as ‘Lunchbox & Snacks’, ‘ Cook Ahead’ and ‘Family Meals in Minutes’, it’s obvious Chef Michael is familiar with juggling the demands of a busy household and a career.  And while many family cookbooks deliver recipes to cook for your family, Chef Michael’s shows you how to have fun in the kitchen with your family. It’s a subject we love around here!

We gobbled up the nutmeg-scented Weekend Pancakes on a recent Saturday morning and I simmered a big batch of Sloppy Joes on my stove yesterday. Don’t ask me why, but I’ve never made sloppy Joes for my kids. “I think I’ll have another one.” said Noah, shyly, after making the first bun disappear in a twinkling.

The boys have pounced on Family Meals, too and we’ve bookmarked another  handful of dishes to make together: Rosemary Apple Braised Chicken, Broccoli Bacon Frittata and Cinnamon Oatmeal Cookies.

True to Penguin’s style, the recipes are easy to follow, the photos gorgeous, and the book is a joy to cook from.  Michael Smith’s Family Meals is available online at both Indigo and Amazon and I’m giving away two copies today!

  14. It depends on the occasion. I usually cook family favourites for birthdays and special occasions. Ham & Scalloped potatoes, Lasagna, Green Pea soup or Friendship soup and sweet and sour meatballs are some of the favourites.

  15. I love Chef Michael Smith and recently visited his Flavour Shack in Souris, PEI. I look forward to adding this cookbook to my collection. His recipes are always easy to follow – my favourite is his country bread recipe. So easy, yet so healthy and delicious. A staple in my house!

  16. We are fortunate enough to have lunch and dinner together as a family because we live in a small town. My favorite is lunch because sometimes we are rushed and I get my kids to pitch in and help too. Chef Michael Smith’s recipes dont send me on a trip to the city for ingredients that are not readily available.

  17. I work in a high school and one question I ask students how often they eat with there family. It’s shocking how many busy families do not eat together. I think this new book by chef Michael is so important to help organize busy families. I love cooking and sharing the meal I prepared with my husband and two girls. Always lively conversation and you learn so much from your family.

  18. When my kids were young, they loved creating their own homemade pizzas with toppings they each chose. Now in their mid twenties, they still love homemade pizza night when they come to visit.

  19. My kids love tacos, and pancakes (not at the same time 🙂 ). Both are easy fuss-free meals that cook up quick. Your Cornmeal pancakes are the only ones we make!
This book looks right up my alley as I am not looking forward to the return of Lunchbox Season.

  20. Right now I would say it is on sunday nights where we have “la once”‘ which is a typical chilean (my husband is from chile) late afternoon tea, with homemade bread, jam, ham, avocado, cheese, tomatoes, eggs and cake.
The kids get to pick what they put on their bread! My 5 year old will talk about it hours before we start on Sundays, and its the only time he happily helps to set the table!

  21. Every Sunday after church we have a tradition of inviting some friends over and making homemade buttermilk pancakes. This time of year they always include either blueberries or raspberries. They’re always devoured by any age!

  22. My favourite is anything my wife makes that brings us and the kids to the table together. Preferably roast chicken with local asparagus and polenta. Topped off with local raspberries and blueberries. Yum!

  23. Really hopeful to get this book for the lunch ideas for school lunches, there must be more than the sandwich idea

  24. To me it’s not so much what we had for dinner, it was the time we actually spent together as a family, talking about nothing and everything at the same time. I never realized as a younger child but now those days mean so much to me. Now starting my own family I look forward to gatherings around the supper table, as the product is always honest and so to will the conversation. Family meals are always welcome, no matter what’s on the plate.

  25. so excited to hear about this giveaway. My son and I watch Michael’s shows and cook one of his recipes every time its my sons night to cook. Bonding over the cooking and eating of the meals we prepare together, not only teaches him an important life skill, but also brings our family to the table. Thanks Michael!!!

  26. I recently asked my mom for her BBQ ribs recipe. It is one of my favourites growing up and I love that my two girls get to enjoy one of my childhood favourites and it is now one of theirs!
