Gearing up for canning season (Tattler Reusable Canning Lids Giveaway)

Last week we cracked open the last of the canned apricots in honey syrup and spooned them up with whipped cream.

That jar was the end of my fruit preserves from last summer (although there’s still jam to be found) and it got me thinking about the season ahead. I intend to make up for lost time this year, as last summer my pregnancy left me too tired to cook dinner, let alone put up produce. Even though I’m certain this summer is going to be one of the busiest ever, and I’ll have a baby to care for, I’m determined to keep my canning pot occupied.

Local produce hasn’t quite hit the markets yet, but I am getting ready for it. Making sure I have a supply of large and small reusable canning lids from Tattler is an important part of planning for canning.

Tattler Lids provide a cost effective alternative to metal lids, as well as a safe, environmentally friendly product for home food preservation. I’ve been using their lids for over a year now with no complaints and I recommend them to my friends and family. It’s nice to know that the food I am preserving is BPA free.

Hit the jump to read about a few more ways I’m getting ready for the canning season, and a mega giveaway from Tattler Reusable Canning Lids! One winner will take home a giveaway package of 100 regular lids AND 100 wide mouth lids with reusable rubber rings!

Prepping for 2012 Canning Season

Back to Basics. It’s never a bad idea to review canning basics, and with my frazzled postpartum brain, it is essential. If your new to canning or just looking for a refresher, read our Canning 101 primer.

Equipment Check. Don’t be the knumbskull who is all set to jam – only to discover the pectin is past its due date and there’s nary an empty jar in the pantry. Go over everything you will need, toss those old canning lids containing BPA, and order some reusable lids from Tattler. Now you’re set.

Plan to Stay Sane. I mean it. Set realistic goals and check out these 7 Ways to Avoid Burnout During Canning Season. You can thank me come October.

Get a Guidebook. Luckily for us, Marisa of Food in Jars (and Simple Bites contributor) has a cookbook coming out in just a few days and in plenty of time for spring produce. Food in Jars: Preserving in Small Batches Year-Round is available for pre-order on Amazon, so get yours now! Also, be sure to check out Marisa’s book tour page to see if she is coming to a city near you.

  1. I plan to can more than just tomatoes and jam this year! that’s what I did last year, learning to can and with the tattler lids I found! Good luck everyone!

  2. I would *love* to win these lids! We have plans for lots of preserving this year, but we are most excited about the jam we’re going to can to give as favors at our wedding this September. We plan to pick peaches and blueberries, as we do every year, and make Spiced Peach Blueberry jam for our friends and family. We hope they love it as much as we do!

  3. One thing? Most important of all: to follow all the advice and links on Simple Bites, including sourcing Tattler Lids in Australia and – if unfindeable – ordering them from the US (to Hobart, Tasmania!)

(Have tweeted, FB x 2, and even Google+)

  4. Planning on making another round of Marisa’s Tomato Jam… that was my fav last year!

  5. I’m excited to can more applesauce! It’s my favorite and I gave a lot away for Christmas presents last year.

  6. We plan to try some or any new recipes we can find for rhubarb & apricots as we will be having an over abundance of both this year.

  7. Going to put up the left over ham that I bought for 99 cents a pound. Then I am going to make some split pea soup with the 4 ham bones that I have and can what we don’t have for dinner. I think little jars of chopped ham will be so nice to add to a quiche or some scalloped potatoes or a pizza.

  8. My canning to do list includes canning 50 one gallon jars of tomato sauce … I’m new to canning, so, if gallon jars aren’t an option then I hope to use whichever the biggest ones are :*)

I also want to can a lot of other (not quite so large) items too :*)

  9. I’m married to Santa and this will be our first year of canning. We’re very excited about it. I just liked on Face Book. I hope I win as this would really give us a head start on our supplies as well as give you an extra check mark on the good list. 🙂

  10. Ok dokey: I am now following (and have Liked) Tattler Canning on both Facebook and Twitter … and have also twitted the supplied quote :*)
And, I have also Liked Simple Bites on Facebook as well … thank you for the extra entry opportunities :*)

  11. I\’m just about out of everything, except pickles and relish. lol So I have a big list this year. Starting with jellies and jams than moving on to tomato products, green beans and potatoes. I\’ve already started by making 5 jars of Red Bud Jelly and I have juice in the freezer to make more. Thanks for the giveaway!

  12. My todo list for year year…
Lots of apple butter, pumpkin butter, salsa, tomatoes, green beans with new potatoes, pickled beets, and pickled okra if I get any.

  13. I like Tattler lids on FB & have for a while.. I have 2 dozen of each and I love, love, love them..
Just be sure to plan on using the metal rings on some of your preserves if you give them to friends and family as gifts.. Keep the Tattler ones at home. 😉

  14. On my canning to-do list this year: FINALLY get around to loads of apricot jam and/or apricot butter! This is my third summer canning, and last year unfortunately the apricot crop in the northeast was dismal due to the load of early spring rains. This year, I am making it happen! 😀 Thanks for the contest!

  15. I’m excited to do favorites like applesauce and peaches as well as try some new things I’ve learned about.

  16. Would LOVE to have these as I am just starting my canning journey this summer 🙂 Hope to put up some jams, applesauce, apple butter, peaches, and any overabundance from our garden 🙂

  17. I’m going to put up strawberry preserves and tomatoes for sure, and I’d love to try out at least one other new recipe this year.

  18. I’m new to canning this year, and I’ve got a garden going, so I hope to can green beans and tomatoes this year!
