Introducing…Bloggers without Borders (and a giveaway)

My parents raised me to give generously of my time, my abundance, my life; yet it’s all too easy to get caught up in the Busy. There are many instances when I have longed to do more, be more. But how to do so from my own home, my little corner of things?

I can’t abandon my own family to go volunteer in a famine-stricken country. I am not a political figure, nor am I independently wealthy. I am just a mom, doing what I can for those close to me. And so, I continue to write my food blog, encourage others to give their kids a nourishing breakfast, support their partner in the kitchen, and cook from scratch, among other topics.

Writing Simple Bites is incredibly rewarding, but for some time I have wanted to do more, to touch others, to do good. It is with a full heart that I am blessed beyond belief to share with you today about Bloggers without Borders.

Bloggers without Borders: A Beginning

After months of dreaming, weeks of planning, days of coordinating, and hours upon hours of work, the vision of a non-profit organization for bloggers, by bloggers has become a reality for Bloggers without Borders founders, Maggy Keet and Erika Pineda-Ghanny.

It is an honor to be working with friends and fellow bloggers Maggy and Erika in their endeavors to harness the goodwill of the blogging community for charity. You’ll see the words ‘Social Media Manager’ next to my photo on the About Us page, which I think means –I’m chatty, I guess!

We’re incredibly proud of the beautiful website, with its awesome header and logo designed by the big-hearted Irvin of Eat the Love. Maggy has written an amazing description of What We Do, so if you’re a little fuzzy on exactly what Bloggers wtihout Borders is all about, be sure to read her manifesto.

The First BwoB Project: A Fund for Jennie

You are already familiar with the recipient of our first project, Jennie. In ‘A Pie for Mikey’ I shared about our friendship, her recent loss, and the food bloggers who showed their love by making peanut butter pies. You all listened and responded so beautifully.

Well, now we’re taking another, more practical step and are on a mission to create a fund for Jennifer Perillo and her two girls, ages 3 and 8, providing them with financial support during this difficult time.

The project is spearheaded by Shauna of Gluten Free Girl, under the umbrella of Bloggers without Borders. You can read the project summary for details on Jennie’s needs and our goals for this fundraiser.

What You Can Do

I know you want to come alongside me with BwoB and Jennie’s fund. Like I shared above, we’re all looking for ways to reach out to others and bless them. This time, it just so happens to be a friend of mine who is in need. How perfect.

There are many ways you can help.

1. ‘Like’ our Bloggers without Borders Facebook page and suggest it to ten friends!

2. Donate! You can click on the BWOB button above to make a PayPal donation. 100% of proceeds will go to Jennifer Perillo.

3. Add the BwoB badge to your sidebar. In good faith that you will do this, here is the code:

  2. I found out about such an amazing cause and fantastic organization a few days ago via David Leite and right away donated. I love seeing how all of us foodies join in to help such as wonderful cause. I know this sounds bizarre perhaps, but… I am only interested in participating in your giveaway in the eventuality I win and can then ask to add the 8-piece collection to the auction.

  12. It is wonderful that the blogging community has rallied around Jennie and her girls. God bless you all. My donation is made.

  13. My daughter was eleven when she passed away. She leaves a legacy of giving. She was known to yell to stop the car if she saw someone collecting money for something. We’d turn around and go back so she could donate a dollar.

Olivia’s belief was that if everyone who was asked to donate chipped in ONE DOLLAR instead of the answer we so often hear “I can’t afford it”, that collectively huge change could happen. One dollar. Everyone has one dollar, right? That’s what she’s known for.

After her passing, she was written up in The Detroit News for her giving ways.

Anyhow, I’m now on disability and don’t have much. But to help out Jennie’s family and to honor Olivia’s legacy, I donated the minimum suggested for Jennie – plus one dollar for Olivia.

  14. I donated. It’s so nice to see everyone come together to show their love and support for Jennie and her girls.
