Third Time’s a Charm

Yesterday brought about the sweet, sweet discovery that I’m carrying a baby girl. She’ll be joining big brothers, Noah and Mateo, in our growing brood and will probably rule the roost someday if she’s half as charming as most little girls I know. I hope she likes cars and Legos, otherwise, we’ve got some catching up to do around the home as far as little girls are concerned.

When the technician gently shared the news with all of us – yes, my 20 week ultrasound was a family outing – an incredulous “Really?” exploded out of me in a sob that seemed to stem from my long past days as a six-year-old doll-loving girl. Although a healthy baby was our main desire, apparently, deep down, I ardently wanted a little girl. I was weeping on and off for at least an hour afterward.

We never expected a girl. A family of strapping boys was predicted and presumed as there hadn’t been a girl fathered by a Bourque in over 4o years. Danny has seven brothers. They just don’t do girls. Until now.

So Danny is walking very tall; I’m emotional, yet at peace; the boys are delighted. Noah reached for his sketchbook the minute we got home and documented the family news in the artwork photographed above.

We’re feeling incredibly blessed, and are tremendously excited to meet this little flower.

  1. Congratulations! I'm so happy for you.

(Can't wait to find out whether *my* little shrimp is a girl or boy — still three more weeks before the next ultrasound!).

I've been following your blog for a couple of years now and I'm always glad to find a new post from you in my Google reader. Longue vie à Under The High Chair!

  2. Yay! Yay! Yay! I just knew it! I'm so excited for you! 😀

I know exactly how you feel. Both me and James come from very strongly dominated male families and I never thought I would have a girl. I didn't really believe it until she was born. I'm so excited for you!

It's amazing just how different they are from the get-go. But no worries about the legos and cars. Those are the things I'm constantly having to run after Alli for because they're her favourite of Max's toys. 🙂 (thankfully he doesn't have any small lego's yet)

Enjoy all the pink that's yet to come! 🙂

  3. Yay! Oh that is so exciting. I felt the same way when I was passed my newly born baby and told it was s girl….and that was just after having one boy. I thought they would all be boys. But for you, what a joy! Congratulations Aimée!

  4. Congrats Aimee!! That's such fun news. You're going to have a blast with a little girl in the house. 🙂 We have the opposite here – two big sisters and now a little brother. We'll have to swap advise and stories haha. Best wishes with the remainder of your pregnancy!

  5. Hooray!!! I have a friend whose husband's family hadn't had a girl since – for real – slavery. And maybe not even then, but they didn't have records in slavery so much. She had a girl for no. 3, and they nicknamed her "baby 3dinosaur"! Then no. 4 was a girl, too!

Enjoy the hairties and pink fluffy things. 🙂 Katie

  6. So happy for you all!! Every baby is a blessing…and I'm very thankful that I've been given girl blessings and boy blessings! You're gonna love it. 🙂

  7. I've just started crying… again… but maybe that's because my own little girl (first child) is only eleven days old today. *grin* Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations! There's nothing like it.

  8. Congratulations! I have two little girls and I just think they are the best!

To be fair, there are lots of dolls, dress up, pretend make up and hair products around the house.

  9. So glad to hear that all is well with the baby and very excited for you to hear that you are having a girl. I can only imagine how wonderful this news was for you and Danny. Noah and Mateo are going to be the best of big brothers to her. She's a very blessed little girl already. Congratulations Aimee.

  10. Oh, a huge congrats to you!!!!! I totally understand the desire for a baby girl — and that elated feeling of walking on air when they tell you that amazing news, when you are fully expecting another boy! Enjoy!
