The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook Giveaway

I first fell in love with the British series period drama Downton Abbey when I was some 30 weeks pregnant with Clara, back in the dark, chilly days of January. Ordered to partial bed rest by my doctor, and with bad back pain and numb arms that curbed my ability to write, I found myself prone on the sofa one evening, flipping channels. I happened upon Downton Abbey with its high tea, high hats, and high drama, and was hooked in five minutes.

Yes, we love the sister rivalries, romantic triangles and sweeping English landscapes, but Downton Abbey is also quite a show for foodies, and this summer I was not surprised to hear that a cookbook was in the works. The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook: From Lady Mary’s Crab Canapes to Mrs. Patmore’s Christmas Pudding – More Than 150 Recipes from Upstairs and Downstairs (F+W Media, September 2012) by Emily Ansara Baines (Author of The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook) will be released September 18 – today!

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy and have had heaps of fun brushing up on my British fare. Bubble & Squeak, anyone? Look for the English Eccles Cakes recipe (pictured at top) to come this week… Now hit the jump for a chance to win one of THREE copies of the cookbook.

Dining (up or down) is a big part of Downton Abbey, with elaborate multi-course meals and daily elegant teas. The unofficial Downton cookbook is divided into two parts: “Dining With the Crawleys” and  “Sustenance for the Staff”, with both sections equally tempting. Recipes for such classics as Beef Wellington and steak pie would make any man – aristocrat or not – happy, while plenty of recipes for scones and shortbread are sprinkled throughout for the ladies.

So until Season 3 airs on this side of the pond (January, 2013) you can bring a little bit of estate life into your kitchen or around your table with The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook.

**Update: get the recipe for the English Eccles Cakes pictured above! From the DA cookbook.**

  1. Matthew!

  2. Mr. Bates is my hands down favourite character.

  3. My fave Downton character is the Dowager Countess….Maggie Smiths character!

  4. my British husband would love for us to have this book!!

  5. That’s a tough question! I seem to always come back to the Dowager Countess. She is incredibly witty and sarcastic. I love it. 🙂

  6. oh and my favorite character is Mr. Bates

  7. Oh how fun! I adore the show. My favourite is without question the Countess. Maggie Smith was a regular customer when I worked in London in my early 20’s and she was the sweetest most lovely lady. She knew I was terribly homesick and every time she came in she would ask how I was making out and chat to me about Vancouver (which she loved). And eccles cakes! I haven’t had those since I was a kid! My british mum would sometimes give them to us as a special treat. I haven’t seen them in real life in ages!

  8. I love Lady Violet!

  9. The Dowager Countess of course! My favorite line – “What exactly is a weekend?” hah!

  10. Countess, hands down! I can’t believe I didn’t know about this! I have a (completely ridiculous) collection of TV and book related cookbooks! My favorite is the Anne of Green Gables one because the recipes are actually tied into the books.

  11. Mr. Bates!! Is there really anyone else of consequence?
Would LOVE to have the cookbook.

  12. I have just started watching Downton right before this post of yours came along. So I can blame it on you that I have watched almost all of season one within two days, just to be able to give you a valid answer based on my new knowledge 😉 I really like Mr Bates of course and that little Chauffeur is just a cutie. Thanks for getting me hooked on this

  13. Also tweeted it here: .I don’t know how to link to a specific tweet 🙁

  14. That *is* a tough question.
I’ve grown to like Matthew and Lord Crawley as the show continues on. Overall, Anna might be my favorite, followed quickly (maybe tied) by Mr. Bates. 🙂

    Thanks for the fun giveaway!

  15. I really like Anna.

  16. I love Sybil. I can’t wait for the next season to start!

  17. Lady Mary is my favorite!

  18. I’d have to go with Matthew as my favorite!

  19. Jonquil Alexia says

Violet, The Dowager Countess. She has the best lines delivered by a wonderful actress!

  20. I’m sure that many have already said the same but I’m going to have to go with Matthew although I have to say I’m a huge fan of Sybil as well.

  21. Mine is Matthew of course

  22. It’s hard to pick! I think Lady Mary changed a lot for the better so she’s my official answer. But I do love Matthew and the Dowager Countess as well. The banter between the Dowager Countess and Mrs. Crawley is priceless.

  23. Matthew !!

  24. Definitely Matthew

  25. Yes, Matthew is pretty wonderful, but I really love the transformation that has taken place in Mary over the two seasons. I’m interested to see where their relationship goes, with the personalities involved, you know it will be an adventure.

  26. And tweeted…

  27. My favorite by far is Mr. Bates!!

  28. I love Lady Mary! She is equal parts love-able and hate-able!

  29. Lady Sybil is my favorite. Strong and independent. Living a much simpler but harder life!!

  30. Cousin Matthew is my favorite! love him!
