The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook Giveaway

I first fell in love with the British series period drama Downton Abbey when I was some 30 weeks pregnant with Clara, back in the dark, chilly days of January. Ordered to partial bed rest by my doctor, and with bad back pain and numb arms that curbed my ability to write, I found myself prone on the sofa one evening, flipping channels. I happened upon Downton Abbey with its high tea, high hats, and high drama, and was hooked in five minutes.

Yes, we love the sister rivalries, romantic triangles and sweeping English landscapes, but Downton Abbey is also quite a show for foodies, and this summer I was not surprised to hear that a cookbook was in the works. The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook: From Lady Mary’s Crab Canapes to Mrs. Patmore’s Christmas Pudding – More Than 150 Recipes from Upstairs and Downstairs (F+W Media, September 2012) by Emily Ansara Baines (Author of The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook) will be released September 18 – today!

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy and have had heaps of fun brushing up on my British fare. Bubble & Squeak, anyone? Look for the English Eccles Cakes recipe (pictured at top) to come this week… Now hit the jump for a chance to win one of THREE copies of the cookbook.

Dining (up or down) is a big part of Downton Abbey, with elaborate multi-course meals and daily elegant teas. The unofficial Downton cookbook is divided into two parts: “Dining With the Crawleys” and  “Sustenance for the Staff”, with both sections equally tempting. Recipes for such classics as Beef Wellington and steak pie would make any man – aristocrat or not – happy, while plenty of recipes for scones and shortbread are sprinkled throughout for the ladies.

So until Season 3 airs on this side of the pond (January, 2013) you can bring a little bit of estate life into your kitchen or around your table with The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook.

**Update: get the recipe for the English Eccles Cakes pictured above! From the DA cookbook.**

  1. My favorite character is Mrs Patmore.

  2. Mrs Patmore, I like her quick temper and snappy attitude!

  3. Rachael Warrington says

I would love to fall in love with any of them. I have not seen but a few episodes, so I would love to see the first season before the next season comes out.

  4. I love the Dowager Countess. She says exactly what she thinks, all the time! LOVE that show!

  5. My favorite is the Dowager Countess. She is hysterical.

  6. Hands down, Lady Violet. I plan to do nothing but wear fancy hats and bandy sarcastic barbs when I get old, in her honor.

  7. The Dowager Countess for her witty and sarcastic lines and Anna for her strength and character!

  8. Oh I LOVE Sybil. She’s sweet, funny, brave AND cute! hehe

  9. Tweeted!

  10. Wow, way to pick an impossible question…. I think I’m going to have to say Anna, although I also adore Mr. Bates and Sybil.

  11. Oh Anna for sure 🙂

  12. Can I pick two? Anna & Mr. Bates. They are a couple anyway… 🙂

  13. My favourite Downton Abbey character is Matthew 🙂

  14. gosh, this is tough! Anna.

  19. Tweeted!

  20. I just found this show on Netflix and watched the first season in one day. Anna is my favorite character in the show. The second season I have on hold at the libary, can not wait to see it.

  21. Being the eldest of three sisters, I can’t help identifying with Lady Mary. I’d say that my heart goes to Mr. Carson, though!

  22. I love the Dowager Countess, but I’ve always had a softspot for Maggie Smith!

  23. Of course, my favorite is The Right Honourable Dowager Countess! But Anna is a very close second; I love my strong female characters! 🙂

  24. I am starting to love Mary – her realness, her string of bad luck and how she’s bouncing back. I would love this cookbook! A few friends and I are actually planning on having watching parties when season 3 airs in the U.S. I’d love to cook Downton Abbey meals!

  25. Gotta go with the Dowager Countess!

  26. I love them all but have very special affection for Daisy. She has all kinds of potential as a head cook, but will someday be a landowner when her father in law dies. Her guilelessnsess is refreshing.

  27. My favorite character is Matthew!

  28. I love Anna and Mr. Bates. It would be hard to choose between them!

  29. Oh, I just got the DVD’s to watch the first two seasons but Id still love to win!

  36. Michele Brinkert says

The dowager countess is the best! What’s a weekend? Love her!

  37. My favorite is definitely Anna!

  38. My favorite is Anna Bates!

  39. Oh, don’t make me pick just one… I lovelovelove them all! And would LOVE to have this book!

  40. Sybil! She’s brave, knows what she wants, and knows how to love & care for people selflessly.

  41. Why, my favorite character is “Martha Levinson!”
I would be thrilled to win a copy of this cookbook…
    Many thanks, Cindi

  42. Oh Mr Bates for sure!

  43. My favorite character – it’s so hard to choose! – would have to be Lord Grantham. I love Hugh Bonneville, and I admire the character of His Lordship. He’s not perfect, but he tries really hard to do the right thing. He reminds me a bit of my own father, which is probably why I like him.

  44. Anna!

  45. Lord Grantham. I adore Hugh Bonneville!

  46. I love Sybil for her free spirit.

  47. Heidi Felton says

    Matthew for sure!!

  49. I love Sybli.
