A Few Favourite Cookbooks from 2019
Where are my cookbook lovers at? This round-up is for you.
There were so many incredible cookbooks released this year, however today’s list contains only the books I had a chance to cook from and read cover to cover. Hence, the recommendations!
There are dozens more that I loved, drooled over, and longing flipped through at the bookstore, but I can’t personally vouch for how the recipes work, so they are not on this list. (I’ll share my wishlist before we wrap up, though).
Back in May I wrote my Spring 2019 Cookbook Picks and it’s a good post to review because they are all fabulous books. However, the ones that haven’t left my kitchen are:
The Prairie Table (I posted the Cold Picnic Barbecue Chicken recipe!)
Peace, Love and Fibre by Mairlyn Smith (I posted the Fudgy Chocolate Two-Bite Brownies recipe!)
Love and Lemons Every Day by Jeanine Donofrio
Oven to Table by Jan Scott (I shared the Cream Beef Stroganoff Soup recipe!)
Modern Lunch by Allison Day ( I shared the Citrus, Shrimp and Quinoa Salad!) This one was my all time favourite book from 2019 and I use it frequently.
Fall/Winter 2019 Favourite Cookbooks
The amazing books just kept coming after those spring launches…
I loved the focus on casual gathering with friends (Nothing Fancy, Kitchen Party) as well as the pushback on so-called ‘clean eating’ in Dirty Food and the return to nostalgia in Midwest Made. These are my picks:
Cannelle et Vanille: Nourishing, Gluten-Free Recipes for Every Meal and Mood by Aran Goyoaga (I made the Mix & Match Granola!)
Nothing Fancy: Unfussy Food for Having People Over by Alison Roman (I posted the Roast Squash with Yogurt and Spiced Pistachios).
Midwest Made: Big, Bold Baking from the Heartland by Shauna Sever
Kitchen Party: Effortless Recipes for Every Occasion by Mary Berg
Dirty Food: Sticky, Saucy, Gooey, Crumbly, Messy, Sharable by Julie Van Rosendaal
Favourite Zero Waste Kitchen Books
These aren’t 2019 books, but I discovered them this year and have been finding a lot of inspiration between the covers for my #zerowaste journey.
- Cooking with Scraps: Turn Your Peels, Cores, Rinds and Stems into Delicious Meals by Lindsay-Jean Hard
- Scraps, Wilts + Weeds: Turning Wasted Food into Plenty by Mads Refslund

My 2019 Cookbooks Wishlist
Cakes, Vegetables, One Pan….these are topics I can’t get enough of in cookbooks. And we all need inspiration for family cooking, so a few of these titles are here for that. As always, I’m dreaming big when it comes to adding to my cookbook library.
- From the Oven to the Table by Diana Henry ~ We studied Diana in our cookbook club and I love all of her works.
- Whole Food Cooking Every Day by Amy Chaplin ~ I loved her first book!
- Simple Cake by Odette Williams
- Ruffage: A Practical Guide to Vegetables by Abra Berens
- Family: New Vegetarian Comfort Food to Nourish Every Day by Hetty McKinnon
- Zaitoun: Recipes from the Palestinian Kitchen by Yasmin Kahn

Please share in the comments! What is a cookbook you discovered this past year?
I love these cookbook posts…please keep doing them a couple times a year! I put all on hold at the library and then bake/cook from them and decide which ones get a spot in my amazon cart–usually 1-3 per year…I already have my eye on the Canelle et Vanille one for a Christmas gift to myself. I LOVE her blog and have loved her GF goodies for years.
Sarah, thanks for the feedback. I do wonder if anyone really cares. But with SO many cookbooks coming out each year, how does one know, right?
I’m glad you enjoy these posts and yes I’ll keep them coming! Aran’s new book is incredibly special. A keeper, for sure.
Love these suggestions!!
Also, I have both your cookbooks and use them often!!
Nicole! You made my day. Thank you!
I love these cookbook posts!! My husband always complains that I have too many cookbooks. Do you ever thin your collection out? I find it so difficult!
Hey Sarah, I do cull from time to time. I give away a lot! But I use most of them for research, so they are very valuable to me! 🙂
Real Life Dinners by Rachel Hollis found a home in my kitchen.
I bought Oven to Table after your post with the Stroganoff Soup! So good!!
Happy New Year 🙂
